Miwl 2

In progress

An old Python desktop app, getting a second life. A local workspace for chat, summarization, article generation and paraphrasing.

Original

2020–21

Original implementation

The original Python / Kivy project included working facial recognition using face embeddings. Written without AI coding assistance; the app itself already used AI models.

Complete 6 min 40 sec recording, silent, with privacy masks. The complete original recording is presented alongside the current interface tour.

Reimagined

2026

Imagined by Aekam. Built and curated by Miwl.

Miwl 2. A local PySide6 workspace with text operations, file-based speech, FTS5 document search with exact quotations and citation context, and recognition integration checked with synthetic inputs.

Approved silent 64-second interface tour. It opens with a saved fictional summary, then shows the composer and disconnected or empty tools. No fresh generation, document retrieval, voice processing or camera recognition is demonstrated.

Verified in slices, documented as it develops

Real-face accuracy, calibration, native vision interaction, live audio workflows and the native document-removal check remain unverified. Synthetic checks do not establish real-world recognition accuracy.

THEN / NOW / NEXT

Same curiosity.
New chapter.

The checkpoints that can be traced, from the first build to the current version.

  1. Version one.

A Python / Kivy desktop application with working facial recognition using face embeddings. The code header is dated 23 October 2020.

  2. Out in the open.

The original code was committed to GitHub on 1 March 2021.

  3. On the shelf.

The historical repository was archived on 7 February 2024.

  4. Current build checkpoint.

136 app tests pass. FTS5 document search, exact quotations and citation context are implemented; native import, search and citation have been verified. Native document removal and real-camera validation remain pending.

LATEST CHECKPOINT / OCT 03, 2026

A working slice.
Still a work in progress.

Local text operations, file-based speech, document import, search and citation have been exercised. The checkpoint includes 136 passing app tests and synthetic camera checks. Real-face accuracy, calibration, native vision interaction and the native document-removal check still need validation.

Build story / 5 MIN

Rebuilding a desktop AI assistant

An early Python and Kivy application brought language tools, voice features, and face recognition into one interface. More than five years later, Miwl 2 revisits the concept with a narrower scope and a more deliberate approach to reliability and privacy.
